Laura's Tomorrow
Drama, by Costantino Maiani, Italy, 2019.
Florence, present day. Laura is a married woman in her mid-forties with a teenage daughter. She begins to experience distress at home and at work as a result of a sexual assault she has suffered. Her quality of life gradually deteriorates: she has nightmares, physical ailments and unusual behavioural changes. When Stefania arrives as the new director at her workplace, Laura initially struggles to establish a good relationship with her. Over time, however, Stefania reaches out to her, and the two women develop a bond and become friends. Laura eventually finds the strength to open up to Stefania about what she has been through.
*Il domani di Laura* addresses the issue of violence against women. The film was part of the *Firenze Crowd – FondiAmo Comunità* project (2018), supported by the Fondazione CR Firenze and the Fondazione Il Cuore si Scioglie Onlus. Violence against women remains one of the major challenges facing contemporary society, both because of its prevalence and because of the serious psychological, relational and social consequences it has for survivors. The director approaches this complex subject from a less frequently explored perspective: rather than depicting the act of violence itself, the film focuses on its harmful aftermath and on how the trauma prevents the protagonist from carrying on with her everyday life.
