I Am Not a Racist
Drama, satirical, by C.D. Vallada, United States, 2019.
Freemenville is a small American town trying to come to terms with its history of slavery, celebrating the anniversary of its abolition every year with a grand ball. This year’s event could become a memorable occasion thanks to the possible presence of a celebrity who has come to town to attend the premiere of a stage play. But the work chosen is D. W. Griffith’s The Birth of a Nation, a controversial and openly racist film that turns the celebration into an opportunity to bring to light tensions and prejudices that still exist within the community.
A parody of Griffith’s celebrated film, I Am Not a Racist rearranges scenes from the original work and rewrites its dialogue to expose its racism and connect it to discrimination in the present day. Through provocative satire, the film gradually reveals the contradictions of a society that claims to have moved beyond its past but remains deeply shaped by it. The story culminates in a reenactment of the Ku Klux Klan, transforming the cinematic parody into a reflection on contemporary racism and on the difficulty of recognizing prejudices that remain deeply rooted in society.
