Director Statement
My parents are from the northeastern Indian state of Manipur. It has been under military control since 1958 to quell ethnic tensions and insurgencies. The Armed Special Forces Act (AFSPA) gives army officers the license to arrest, kill, or search people's homes without a warrant. Its powers have been abused for the past 65 years. This year, riots have reduced homes, churches, and schools to ashes. People are still dying today. In response, the Manipur government imposed the second-longest internet blackout in history: 143 days. The longest was in Kashmir: 552 days.
