The Wake

The Wake

Drama, by Bernadette Manton, Ireland, 2014.
A 17-year-old Irish girl returns to her beloved County Clare in the west of Ireland, a lush and almost fairytale-like landscape filled with beauty and precious memories. But her return will change forever when she attends the wake of her beloved grandmother. Immersed in the traditions of the community and the landscape of her childhood, the girl comes to terms with the pain of loss and discovers that her grandmother’s memory can live on through music.

With sensitivity and emotional depth, *The Wake* explores the delicate transition from adolescence to an awareness of loss, transforming grief into an experience of memory, love and continuity. Music, deeply rooted in Irish culture, becomes the thread running through the story, featuring songs by Christy Moore, Dónal Lunny, Declan O’Rourke and Ronan Daly. Against the backdrop of County Clare, the landscape becomes an integral part of the story, in an intimate and evocative journey where the beauty of nature, tradition and music celebrate the bond between those who remain and those who continue to live on in memory.
